RICHARD SMYTH. A BRIEF HISTORY
I like to do my paintings of automobiles close up and personal sitting in front of them and drawing from life.
I like to call it..." In the Metal!".
Being outside means seeing the interaction of light and shade on the subject. Sometimes in the heat and sometimes in the cold but it all adds up to a feeling of being there instead of copying from a photograph.
I say that with caution because the camera is an invaluable toolfor recording all those minute details of an automobile's body.
Ferraris have a natural attraction for me with their beautiful and sensual lines, obviously designed by people with a great passion for what they do!
Richard’s early years
I was born in England in 1940 while my father was away with the Royal Engineers in France. He was fortunate to escape back to England from Dunkirk with the miracle of the little ships.
Through my father, who was a brilliant civil engineer I learnt perspective drawing.
Sadly, he passed away at a young age and I was sent away to a strict boarding school. To avoid the regimented existence, I used to "hide out" for many happy hours in the schools Art Studio.
I had a great teacher whose name of all things was Mr. Renoir!
I won many awards for my artwork on prize days!
Professional years
On leaving school I served a five-year apprenticeship with the Metal Box Company.
MB had offices and studios all over the then British Empire employing many artists as package (food) designers.
A great benefit of my training is that they sent me to art school, the London College of Printing.
My classes for five years were titled Museum Drawing.
This was drawing on the spot everything from prehistoric skeletons to automobiles.
My teacher Leslie Richardson taught me about composition, montage work and pen and ink.
He once said to me" you are here to learn to draw, not paint pretty pictures."
It was a very small class and two of my classmates were Ralf Steadman and Gerald Scarfe both by the way brilliant Pen and Ink Artists who went on to world fame!
From the 60’s on
In the early 60s America called as that's where the opportunities seem to lie.
I had already studied all the great US magazine automotive artists.
The greatest of all was Art Fitzpatrick known for his amazing Pontiac illustrations!
I was lucky to land a job in Chicago at Anderson Kitzerow studios and later had my own business at first Airbush Arts Inc and then Advanced illustration and Design.
During this time, I studied with David Kimble the noted Cutaway automotive artist
I had the good fortune to go to a talk by Ken Dallison, another fabulous pen and ink artist who had a very great influence on my work.
Retirement time
To get up to date, on retirement I visited the Kairmont Collection in Chicago.
For the past three years I have been drawing cars there.
Last year they published a calendar with twelve of my works!
The last three year I have designed and illustrated three posters for Road America in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin plus many private commissions.
I started drawing from an early age.
My first teacher noticed that I drew blocky people while others drew stick people.
I made the decision to go down the sciences route at 16 years old instead of pursuing my art.
I started again a few years ago and now specialise in car portraits.
I especially love Ferraris and have painted lots of them. In fact, my latest commission is a 288 GTO front profile for a business associate!

Robert Stephen Moore
Born: 1956, Illinois, USA
Robert Stephen Moore is a painter of pop-art whose work focuses on a unique and colorful view of the familiar.
Robert's background and education is in the scientific side of Geography, particularly Cartography and
Satellite image processing.
In the 1970s, he was one of the first users of sophisticated computer modeling software for developing remotely sensed satellite maps.
He worked for over 30 years as a
consultant and entrepreneur developing computerized mapping systems and databases and was utilizing newly created computer color/image processing technology to accomplish this work.
After retirement, Robert discovered painting and is self-taught.
He now reaches deep into his
experience with computer graphics to help him visualize the subjects he paints. Using texture and color, Robert creates realistic images of what interests him.
Robert works daily in his mountain home studio in Sylva, North Carolina and an apartment in Buenos
Aires, Argentina in the winter and on his farm in Lisbon, New Hampshire in the summer.
He is actively
building a portfolio of diverse subject matter, always looking for new and interesting material.
This gallery wrap is prepared so that the entire image shows on the face of the canvas -- not around to the sides.
We accomplish this by copying the outer edges of your image -- based upon the thicknness of the stretcher bars -- and then "flip" them to produce a mirrored effect.
The end result is a trim, contemporary look that keeps your original image in full view.
All giclee prints are made using archival, pigmented inks.
Each image is prepared so that the entire image shows on the face of the canvas. Then, we color the edges based upon your feedback.
It is usually best to select a color from the image itself for the accent color. We can help you select a color if you wish.
We will send you a small JPEG attachment in an email for your approval before printing.
All giclee prints are made using archival, pigmented inks.
Modern, sleek, with awe-inspiring colors. ChromaLuxe HD Dye-Sublimation Aluminum prints are the perfect choice to make your image pop, and leave people breathless.
The Dye-Sublimation process is far superior to printing directly on to metal. Your image is permanently fused to the metal through high pressure and heat. This creates an ultra long lasting print with a wide color gamut.
All mouldings we offer are made from 100% wood, never MDF or plastic. We only use acid free, archival mats, and the highest quality acrylic glass to create an extremely high quality professionally framed piece of art. All framed pieces come with paper backing and hanging wire already installed, so they are ready to hang directly out of the box. Drymounting of paper prints is also automatically included when ordering frames from Great Garage Gear.
Currently, we are only offering float frames for canvas pieces. All frames and mats can be added on during the ordering process.
